The second Eastern Equine Encephalitis-infected mosquito found in Massachusetts this year has been found in Halifax.
The first EEE infected mosquito was found in Lakeville earlier this week in a sample taken on Monday.
In addition to EEE, Halifax was also the first town have a mosquito test positive for West Nile Virus in Massachusetts this year. West Nile was detected in a sample taken June 30.
The Department of Public Health also announced Friday that West Nile virus was detected in mosquitoes from Arlington Heights in Middlesex County.
No human cases of EEE have been reported this year or last year. One case was reported in 2008.
The state department of public health says that between 2004 to 2006 there have been 13 cases of triple E, resulting in six deaths- including a 5-year-old girl from Halifax in 2005.
The DPH says most human cases of EEE, and most infected mosquitoes in Massachusetts, occur in Plymouth, Bristol and Norfolk counties- and residents should take precautions against mosquitoes.
