Golf: Pavin selects Ryder Cup team

Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin has selected Tiger Woods and three others to join the team defending the Ryder Cup in October in Wales. Also named today were newcomer Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink. The picks come after the Deutsche Bank Championship at Boston TPC, which went to Charley Hoffman.

Sox make several moves

Boston made several moves yesterday -- including activating catcher Jason Varitek from the disabled list from his broken foot. The Red Sox also recalled outfielder Josh Reddick from Pawtucket for his fourth callup to the majors with the Sox this season. Pawtucket's Lars Anderson was also brought up and he started at first base in last night's Sox win.

Pats and Brady close to a deal

The New England Patriots reportedly are close to a deal on a contract extension with quarterback Tom Brady. Sources close to the talks tell the Boston Herald the Patriots have offered a three-year extension believed to be worth $58 million. Brady has yet to formally agree but all indications are that a deal could be in place within the next day.
